Beckenham High Street Improvements Update

Beckenham Improvements work update 12 March 2018 from LB Bromley and Conway

Phase 4 works 116 to 180 High Street.

  • The granite parking bays up to WH Smiths will be completed. In consultation with the Post Office the existing nearby letter box will be slightly relocated.
  • Paving at the back of the recently completed parking bays will commence. The paving adjacent to shops will be laid during out of trading hours to allow for access to shops during the day. Access will be maintained to all shop entrances.
  • In addition to new kerbs and paving, this section of work will require substantial new drainage due to the history of flooding in the area and the construction of an improved bus stop with a shelter and passenger waiting space, instead of the current a bus stop sign only; with waiting space restricted to a narrow footpath without seating.
  • During construction works, space is limited at the new bus stop location outside Miso and Allure. We are doing everything that we can to alleviate the problem as soon as we can. During the works the bus stop will be temporarily closed.
  • During Phase 4 Conway may be working at several points along this section to ensure the works are completed as soon as possible.

The Mews entrance cross over will be modified to make the pavement / vehicle cross over more visible to pedestrians. This is due to be finished by Sunday afternoon.

Cycle racks have now been installed between Southend Road and Thornton’s Corner. Apologies for the delay in reinstalling the racks outside Marks and Spencer.

Unfortunately next week Thames Water will be making new water connection to the flats above The Card Factory. This will mean some new paving will have to be lifted.

Traffic Management

Two directional traffic from the junction of Rectory/Southend/Albemarle Road/High Street south to Thornton’s Corner cannot resume because of safety concerns. If it were to be reintroduced some vehicles would be forced on to Burnhill Road and Kelsey Square. This would potentially include HGVs which would be particularly unsatisfactory.

Beckenham votes YES in town centre BID ballot

Beckenham businesses have voted for YES in the Business Improvement District ballot.

The ‘Beckenham Together’ BID will give Beckenham businesses a greater say in how the town centre is managed. It follows the outcome of the 4 week ballot which saw a majority of businesses voting for the BID proposal. The total number of votes cast was 112, representing a turnout of 32%. In total, 74% voted in favour, representing 76% of the rateable value of votes cast.

The interim Chairman of the Steering Group behind the BID campaign, Jackie Groundsell of the Beckenham Business Association, said, “We are delighted by the news but this is where the hard work starts. We have spent over a year speaking to local companies and traders to come up with a business plan to provide services that are designed to ensure our town centre continues to thrive. Beckenham already has much to offer and we will be looking to build on this.”

“This is excellent news for Beckenham and our congratulations go to all concerned. The Council is committed to working with the Beckenham Together BID team to make sure that the town centre is as successful as it can be. There is no doubt that it is a challenging period for town centre businesses but this vote will allow for innovation to come forwards and bring further investment into the town, which will be good for business, shoppers and visitors alike” said Councillor Peter Morgan, Executive Councillor for Renewal and Recreation.

The ‘Beckenham Together’ BID team includes representatives from a range of local businesses, such as The Beckenham Bookshop, Burger and Bubbles,  AAA-MiniCabs, Creases and Gallery 17, and large businesses in the town centre such as Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, The Spa, Barclays and Link Asset Services. ‘Beckenham Together’ are looking to deliver services such as a local loyalty scheme, a comprehensive place marketing offer for Beckenham, an expanded programme of events and will introduce Street Ambassadors to be the friendly face of the town centre.

Beckenham will now join the likes of Bromley and Orpington town centres who have both benefitted from having successful BIDs and with neighbouring Penge BID ballot also indicating approval for a BID, more businesses than ever will have the opportunity to get involved in helping to improve their local town centre.

Purple Flag in Beckenham

The Purple Flag team in Beckenham, comprised of officers from LB Bromley and volunteers from West Beckenham RA, Copers Cope Area RA and Beckenham Business Association, have been working hard to improve the evening and night-time economy and lessen any potential adverse impact on local residents.

The team has so far achieved taxi marshals for early morning when the clubs close, door staff trained to deal with vulnerable people and we have also organized a meeting between licensees of the clubs and bars around Beckenham Junction and local residents to mitigate the effects on residents of the early hours economy. Both residents and licensees found the meeting very helpful in understanding each others’ points of view and licensees were very open to suggestions for operational changes that could help.

The team are also planning, with help from the licensees, to organize events in the spring for families in the early evening. Watch this space for details.

The Team will be applying for a renewal of the Purple Flag award in June.

Please help us by completing this short online survey on how you feel about Beckenham, what you use the town centre for, and its safety.
