Beckenham High Street Improvements Update

Beckenham Improvements work update 16 April 2018

Diversion of 352 Bus from 16 April

From the 16th April the High Street from Kelsey Square to the War Memorial will no longer be two way. This is to create sufficient safe space for the contractors to carry out works on the opposite side of the road. The 352 bus will therefore have to be diverted up the High Street and around Rectory Road. Unfortunately this is unavoidable.

Phase 4 works 116 to 180 High Street.

Completed works

  • Paving has been completed to 162 High Street. Kerbing has continued south of the existing pedestrian crossing.

Next week’s works.

  • Footway and kerbing will continue south to The Drive. This phase of works is anticipated to be complete by the 30th April 2018 subject to construction complications or adverse weather.
  • Tactile paving is being continued to be re-laid at Thornton’s Corner. A high quality granite product has always been specified for this area to complement the granite paving. The concrete tactile paving was a temporary measure.
  • The entrance to Leather Alley is due to be re-laid on Thursday and Friday the 12th and 13th April. Vehicle users of the alley have been notified. Please note there is a void under the entrance, and the full extent of the problem needs to be determined. Essential works may mean works won’t be complete by the 13th April.
  • The pedestrian island in The Drive will be removed in anticipation of works to this corner.
  • The existing small, on street compound will be moved to the parking bays outside 258 to 262 High Street. The bays will therefore obviously be out of operation.

Hours of Operation

In order to maintain access to all shop entrances pavement laying will have to be conducted out of normal hours between 18pm and 20pm on some days. We do understand that this can be a nuisance and FM Conway will endeavour to keep noise disturbance to a minimum during these times.

Work by other contractors in Beckenham

Contractors not connected with the project have been working outside Card Factory and the side alley. Thames Water will be on site 3/4/18 to 6/04/18 to connect the new water to the flats above The Card Factory. UKPN have some extra work to complete in the alleyway between Miso and the Card Factory. The reinstatement of the paving outside The Card Factory will be completed by FM Conway.

Beckenham Bunny Hunt Purple Flag success

Regular local supporters of the High Street were joined by crowds of new families getting into the Easter spirit on the Beckenham Bunny Hunt.

“A real family affair in Beckenham, bringing everyone together with fun and laughter”

Em of Em & Lou’s Kitchen.

Beckenham High Street Improvements Update 19 March

Phase 4 works 116 to 180 High Street.

Completed works

  • The granite parking bays up to WH Smiths have been completed. Some have already been made available for parking whilst the remainder will be reopened as soon as feasible. Paving has now been completed to Café Nero.
  • The Post Office has agreed a slight relocation of the existing nearby letter box.

Next week’s works.

  • The paving adjacent to the shops will continue to WH Smith. Kerbing will continue towards Leather Alley.
  • In order to maintain access to all shop entrances pavement laying will have to be conducted out of normal hours between 18pm and 20pm on some days. We do understand that this can be a nuisance and FM Conway will endeavour to keep noise disturbance to a minimum during these times.

The entrance cross over to the alley between Miso and The Card Factory will be repaved on Thursday and Friday 22nd & 23rd March. All residents and businesses using this area to park will be contacted and together with the assistance of the local parking authority relocated parking will be arranged.

Bus Stop J a temporary stop opposite the junction of Fairfield Road and the High Street will be reinstated.

In the next few weeks Thames Water will be making a new water connection to the flats above The Card Factory. Unfortunately some new paving will have to be lifted.

Traffic Management

Two directional traffic from the junction of Bromley Road / Church Avenue / High Street south to Thornton’s Corner cannot resume because of safety concerns. If it were to be reintroduced some vehicles would be forced on to Burnhill Road and Kelsey Square. This would potentially include HGVs which would be particularly unsatisfactory.

Beckenham Bunny Hunt Saturday 24 March

Burger and Bubbles have joined with the Purple Flag team to organise a

Beckenham Bunny Hunt

the week before Easter.

Purple bunnies will be hopping onto shop windows from Clock House to Beckenham Green on Saturday afternoon 24 March.

On the day a purple bunny will go on the windows of the 24 participating locations between Clock House and Southend Road. People can join the trail at any point, and you can pick up a map with instructions where you see the Bunny.  Children get stickers from the shop where they spot a bunny, then take their stickered map to collect a little treat at the ‘end’ of the trail, Burger & Bubbles on Southend Road. You don’t have to find them all!

Or you can print your map at:
