UPDATE on major gas works: Croydon Road, Beckenham

Although Phase 1 was completed a week early, they have encountered engineering difficulties on Phase 2 and now expect it to be completed by 21 August. They still expect the whole thing to last the original 6 weeks. There have been a few incidents such as all three of the temporary traffic lights showing red for some time, causing tempers to fray and lots of angry horn tooting. But SGN have responded quickly when we reported this. Below is their latest message. Marie

…………………………………………………………….

Phase One – Croydon Road, junction with Elmers End Road This phase progressed well and was completed a week earlier than planned on Saturday 27 July Phase Two – Croydon Road, between junction of Elmers End Road and Clock House Road Phase Two started on Monday 29 July, a week earlier than originally planned Our engineers moved location to the other side of the Elmers End Road junction from phase one and began working on the next section of Croydon Road We now expect this phase to last approximately three and a half weeks in total To ensure everyone’s safety we have temporarily closed the eastbound lane of Croydon Road across the Elmers End Road junction up to the junction of Clock House Road We have temporarily closed the southbound left-hand turn lane of Elmers End Road. Motorists will not be able to turn left from Elmers End Road onto Croydon Road during this phase Clock House Road will be temporarily closed at its junction with Croydon Road during this phase Elmers End Station Parade bus stop D remains suspended Phase Three – Elmerside Road, junction with Croydon Road Following on from phase 2, our engineers will move away from the junction of Croydon Road and Elmers End Road to begin work on Elmerside Road at its junction with Croydon Road in the right-hand turn junction for approximately two weeks To allow us to complete our work safely we need to temporarily close the right-hand turn lane of Elmerside Road at the junction of Croydon Road. Motorists will not be able to turn right from Elmerside Road onto Croydon Road Signed diversions will be in place for diverted traffic The pedestrian crossing around our work area will also be suspended

Bus Diversions during road works in Elmers End July to September

Details of bus diversions during the gas main replacement.

Phase one: From 2200 Sunday 21 July 2019 for about two weeks:

Elmers End Road traffic will have to turn left towards Beckenham. On Croydon Road towards Beckenham, traffic will have to turn left onto Elmers End Road. Croydon Road towards Croydon or Crystal Palace will be unaffected

Elmers End Interchange at Tesco will be suspended for the duration of the works. The 54 will terminate at Elmers End Green. The 289 will terminate at Tesco roundabout.

Route 54 – Elmers End Green towards Elmers End

Passengers will alight at stop M on Elmers End Green outside the shops.

Route 54 towards Catford

The route to Woolwich will start at stop J at St James’ Avenue.

Route 289 towards Elmers End

A temporary bus stop will be in place just before the Tesco roundabout where passengers will alight.

 Route 289 towards Croydon

The details are confusing about the westward bound service but it looks like buses will use Long Lane as a stand and then will turn right onto Croydon Road to start service at the Glade bus stop towards Croydon.

 Route 367 towards Beckenham

From Croydon Road at Elmers End Road buses will turn left onto Elmers End Road, ahead on Elmers End Road, turn right onto Beck Lane and follow the same route as the 354 to the High Street joining its normal route at Village Way. Therefore a large area of Eden Park will be without the 367 from Elmers End Green to Village Way.

Route 367 towards Croydon

Normal line of route.

Phase two from Monday 5 August 2019 for about two weeks:

Elmers End Road traffic will have to turn right towards Croydon. Croydon Road traffic will have to turn left at the left filter, towards Crystal Palace. Croydon Road towards Croydon or Crystal Palace will be unaffected.

Routes 54, 289 and 367

As phase one.

Route 356 towards Penge

Normal line of route

Phase three from Monday 19 August 2019 for about two weeks:

The lane next to Elmers End Green on Elmerside Road, joining Upper Elmers End Road and Croydon Road towards Beckenham will be closed and buses will be diverted as follows:

Routes 194 and 358 towards Beckenham

From Elmerside Road at Croydon Road buses will turn left onto Croydon Road, go all around the Tesco roundabout and then straight ahead on Croydon Road to line of route.

Beckenham High Street Improvements Update

Beckenham Improvements work update 23 April 2018

Diversion of 352 Bus will now take place from the end of April

From the end of April, (exact date unknown yet) the High Street from Kelsey Square to the War Memorial will not be two way. This is to create sufficient safe space for the contractors to carry out works on the opposite side of the road. The 352 bus will therefore have to be diverted up the High Street and around Rectory Road.

Completed works

  • Kerbing has continued to The Drive whilst the paving has reached the Nationwide.
  • The tactile paving at Thornton’s Corner has been replaced but not yet cleaned.
  • The crossing point on the junction of The Drive has been slightly relocated and a ramp installed. This ramp although yellow has tarmac underneath to make it more rigid. The height of the existing kerb at this location is fairly low and should not be too steep for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Thames Water has reported a water leak outside Superdrug. The repair will require new paving to be dug up by Thames Water and then reinstated. The Project team recognise the frustration this further disruption may cause however it is beyond their control.

The project team are aware that having to divert pedestrian access on to rough granite setts parking areas has been uncomfortable for some residents. However this has been necessitated by maintaining access to shops during opening hours.

Next week’s works.

  • Footway and kerbing will continue west to The Drive. This phase of works is anticipated to be complete by the 30th April 2018.
  • On Beckenham Green the entrance bollards will be removed and further temporary resurfacing will be laid in preparation of the final resurfacing.
  • The damage to the wall at Beckenham Junction station will be repaired by Tuesday.
