Scams in car parks targeting elderly drivers

Action Fraud have received an increase in reports and intelligence where elderly victims are being targeted by individuals purporting to be police officers or traffic wardens. The victims are being approached whilst parked in a car park and are told by the suspect that they have parked illegally or broken a speed limit and a photo has been taken of their car for ‘evidence’.

Victims are advised that they will face a substantial penalty fine unless they pay a smaller upfront fee immediately. Victims, who opt for paying the smaller penalty, will be directed to a parking meter and asked to enter their card and PIN. These parking meters have been tampered with by the suspect in order to retain the card.

Once the victim inserts their card and are asked for their PIN, the victims are shoulder surfed for their PIN by the suspect. Once victims input their PIN, the card is retained by the machine and victims are told by the suspect to seek help from the company who operates the parking meter or their bank.

What you need to do
  • If you are suspicious about the authenticity of the fine, do not pay it until you have verified it with your local council.
  • Always shield your PIN from view when using an ATM machine, and never share your PIN with anyone.
  • If your bank card is retained by an ATM machine, contact your bankimmediately to inform them.

HOW TO REPORT COUNTDOWN MALFUNCTIONS

The best place to report malfunctions of Countdown monitor signs at bus stops is not the “Fix My Streets” website, but TfL’s own website.

This should be used when there is a black screen rather than when there is a message saying they have no information! Gareth Bacon’s office advise that you select the “OTHER” option in the drop down menu under “what’s your enquiry about?”.

WBRA has kept up pressure on TfL to fix the remaining Countdown signs after the High Street major works and two of the three have now been re-activated.

Remembrance Day Parade Road Closures

The annual Remembrance Day Parade will close the High Street to traffic for a few hours on Sunday 11 November. While the Police do make efforts to publicise the closures and TfL are obviously made aware, there are always big road traffic problems as vehicles are unable to get anywhere near the High Street for a couple of hours

The Parade starts around 10am, so road closures will go in just before this, and roads remain closed probably up until midday-ish.

The closures cover the following roads:

Albemarle Road
St. Georges Road
High Street
Church Avenue
The Drive
The Crescent
Rectory Road

There will be no access to the War Memorial roundabout whatsoever, or the ends of the roads leading into it, ie Beckenham Road & Croydon Road.

Traffic will be held at Village Way, Manor Road, Bromley Road, and Southend Road. Buses will no doubt be on diversion but we have no details.

Beckenham High Street Improvements Update Bus Stop Closure

WBRA have complained to TfL about the lack of information and advance warning about bus stop closures. So it is good to have this warning of another closure at St George’s Church .

When resurfacing starts around the War Memorial, bus stops S (outside Mind) and T (outside Tesco) will be closed in the evening – probably from 8pm onwards. There may be more traffic diversions.
From LB Bromley and Conway
Work is nearing completion on the High Street, but local people have asked for a few additional pieces of work that were not in the original plans. The first of these is extending the new pavement along Bromley Road to outside the alms houses.

F M Conway will be carrying out this work in Bromley Road throughout the coming week beginning 15th October.

This work will consist of new kerbs and paving being laid in keeping with the scheme already completed in Bromley Road. It will commence from the end of the newly laid paving adjacent to St Georges Church and run along The Bromley Road and finish at the junction with St Georges Road.

To facilitate this phase of the work some traffic management will be in place. Bus Stop E just before the junction with St Georges Road will be temporarily closed. TfL will endeavour to relocate a temporary stop within a short distance of the stop.
