New Academy bulldozes land for proposed new school

On 5 January, The Beckenham Academy Trust “E21c” sent in contractors to clear the land it bought from the Co-op on Balmoral Avenue.

All vegetation gone

All vegetation gone

The academy recently bought the land , but has not yet even applied for planning permission to build the school. The land has been a much loved recreational resource for the local people for over 20 years, but now it has all gone. As far as we are aware, it has not undertaken any wildlife assessments., nor consulted with the neighbours.

We have to ask if people who ride rough shod over local people and have little regard for due process of consultation are fit and proper persons to be educating 1100 children in future years. What an example to set!

Balmoral Residents have started a petition to stop the school. Click to link.

Proposals for new school in Balmoral Avenue

The Beckenham Academy trust “E21c” (Education for the 21st Century) has purchased the former Co op Sports Ground in Balmoral Avenue for development as a secondary school in 2016

school site Balmoral

E21c already runs two primary schools and a secondary school in the area. This new school would eventually to take up to 1100 pupils. Neighbouring residents are concerned about the damaging effects of this proposal in the area, particularly on traffic at peak school times in narrow residential roads, and the loss of Urban Open Space of this previous Co-op sports club and bowling green. The academy may also want to take land from the rugby club. A planning application has not yet been made.

“Balmoral Residents” has formed to fight these proposals.

Opposition to the Closure of the Public Toilets in Beckenham’s High Street

The Beckenham Society has lodged a formal objection to the closure of the public toilets in the High Street Beckenham. The proposal will now be discussed at the Executive Committee meeting on 11 February. There is still time to register your objections. You can send them to csc@Bromley.gov.uk

The Beckenham Society has not been able to obtain accurate figures for the running of the toilets. The costings given seem to be vastly out of scale compared with other public toilets in the neighbourhood. The only nearby alternative as a so called Community Toilet is in Costa Coffee in the High Street. This is a single toilet at the rear of the premises with inadequate signage that it is available to non-customers. The council pays £1000 a year to Costa Coffee for this “facility”. Other premises are far away eg Waitrose or the Odeon cinema, and as far as the latter is concerned does not open until the afternoon most days.

Copers Cope Area Residents’ Association have applied to have the toilets listed as an Asset of Community Value, which means that the council would have to offer it to a local group or other provider before selling it on the open market. This location is of course of prime importance to the centre of Beckenham, affording great views of “Church Hill”.

There is great concern that if the toilets were closed, the whole of the flower bed area would be included in any sale. This has not been ruled out by Cllr Smith.
