Beckenham Place Park Consultation

Sadly the Mayor of Lewisham decided last week to proceed with the “renovation” of Beckenham Place Park. This will mean the loss of the much loved golf course. It featured in a Radio 4 Today Programme on 17 February by local man Rob Bonnett, who learnt golf at Beckenham Place Park.

Heritage Tours of Bromley Town Centre

Over the past three months Bromley Civic Society has offered Heritage Tours of the Town Centre which have been extremely well attended. During winter months they are planning a cosy indoor version with a kaleidoscope of pictures old and new tracing the history and heritage of our fine old town particularly focused on what still survives as well as what has been lost.

See their flyer  –  Bromley Civic Society heritage trail

Tributes to David Bowie

WP_20160112_09_46_09_Pro

So much has been said about the death of David Bowie that it is superfluous to add anything more here.

Beckenham arguably has the strongest London links to David Bowie. This is where his career really started with gigs at what was The Three Tuns pub, now Zizzi’s, and at the legendary free concert at the Bandstand in Croydon Road Recreation Ground in 1969. Tributes have been laid at both places.

There are discussions about permanent memorials to Bowie in Beckenham.

New Academy bulldozes land for proposed new school

On 5 January, The Beckenham Academy Trust “E21c” sent in contractors to clear the land it bought from the Co-op on Balmoral Avenue.

All vegetation gone

All vegetation gone

The academy recently bought the land , but has not yet even applied for planning permission to build the school. The land has been a much loved recreational resource for the local people for over 20 years, but now it has all gone. As far as we are aware, it has not undertaken any wildlife assessments., nor consulted with the neighbours.

We have to ask if people who ride rough shod over local people and have little regard for due process of consultation are fit and proper persons to be educating 1100 children in future years. What an example to set!

Balmoral Residents have started a petition to stop the school. Click to link.
