Threatened Closure of Kentwood Adult Education Centre in Penge

Bromley Council is considering proposals to re-organise the three adult education centres in the Borough which could mean withdrawal from all adult education provision (relying on local colleges to provide) or to close Kentwood in Penge and Poverest in Orpington and concentrate facilities in Widmore Road, Bromley. WBRA have written to Education Portfolio holder Cllr Stephen Wells to object. Widmore Road is not easily accessible by public transport and the building there is old and a maze of little corridors and stairs – not user friendly. We have pointed out that courses at all three sites were very poorly advertised and take up, and therefore financial viability, would be much improved by better marketing. There has been a temporary reprieve, in that the paper that was due to be discussed on 27 January by the Education Policy Development and Scrutiny Committee was withdrawn. We understand that Bromley will now wait until the outcome of the first stage of the market testing process in known before considering options.  Just like all other valued services in Bromley, the council is likely to be determined to get rid of this. If you have benefitted from adult education services in Kentwood, write to your councillors.
