Congratulations to our sister RA Copers Cope Area RA for another very successful local produce market on Saturday 19 October, this time linked with the launch of the Beckenham History Trail booklet. The history trail takes you around 23 different places of interest on or near to Beckenham High Street. A booklet explaining the sites can be obtained from Beckenham Library and, in due course, on Bromley’s website.
To launch the event, the market had lots of music, a pony riding show, a funfair and several street entertainers dressed in historical costumes. “Mr and Mrs Beck” from the town coat of arms came to life in a meticulous copy of their clothes.
Mayor Cllr Ernest Noad introduced MP Bob Stewart to plant a tree in commemoration of those residents of Beckenham who were killed by German bombs on the Green in 1944.
Several street entertainers joined Mr and Mrs Beck around the Green and at points along the High Street marking the places of interest.
In attendance were Noddy, Charlie Chaplin and David Bowie, as well as St George, a nurse and a maid, and a member of the Home Guard! Children who collected stamps on their “passport” card at the various sites were rewarded with a bag of olde fashioned sweets from Mr Simms!
